How to Properly Size Yourself for a Bicycle
Finding the perfect bike is exciting, but getting the right size? That’s crucial. A well-sized bike doesn’t just make riding more comfortable—it makes it more enjoyable and efficient. Here’s what you need to know to nail your bike sizing every time:
1. Sizing Isn’t Universal—Don’t Assume!
Just because you ride a medium in one brand doesn’t mean every medium-sized bike will fit the same. Geometry varies across brands and even between models. Some bikes prioritize comfort, while others are built for speed, and these design differences affect sizing. Always check the size chart for the specific bike you’re considering. It’s your road map to finding the right fit.
2. Measure Twice, Ride Right
Accurate measurements are the cornerstone of a great bike fit. For this, you’ll need:
- A friend: While you can certainly measure your own height and inseam, it's much more accurate if someone else takes the measurements while you stand upright.
- Your height: Stand up straight and measure from the floor to the top of your head.
- Your inseam: This isn’t your pant size—repeat, do not rely on your pant inseam! Instead, use our YouTube video to measure correctly. Spoiler alert: it involves standing barefoot against a wall with a book or ruler.
Why is inseam so important? It determines your standover height, or how comfortably you can straddle the bike without feeling like you’ve joined the circus.

The Bottom Line
A properly sized bike isn’t just about numbers; it’s about creating a seamless connection between you and your ride. Take the time to consult the size chart, grab accurate measurements, and avoid shortcuts like using your pants size. With these steps, you’ll be cruising in comfort and style, no matter where your wheels take you.
